Waking a sleeping giant

In July, outgoing CEO Steve Spender travelled to Wales to meet with David Denner, the highway technology manager for the Welsh Government, to discuss the potential reinvigoration of the currently dormant IHE Welsh Branch.
Mr Denner hopes to ‘jump start’ the branch and the meeting centred on how, with the support of the Welsh Government, that could be achieved.
A range of other subjects were also discussed including improved training objectives, particularly with the growth in the use of new technology, and the need to ensure that engineers new to the sector had the correct grounding to help them develop.
The IHE is ideally positioned to help this development through membership and guidance in working towards and achieving professional registration. Mr Denner, whose role includes looking after the strategic road network division, is based at the South Wales Traffic Management Centre at Junction 32 of the M4 just outside Cardiff, which Mr Spender visited. Mr Spender was shown this busy section on the network, which joins Wales to England.
