How do I achieve the Professional Diploma in TTME?

You must have completed the Professional Certificate in TTME before moving onto the Professional Diploma. Having completed the Professional Certificate you will already be an Associate/Member of the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). Please sign in to book onto the Diploma course.

Courses can also be run as an in-house option. Please email events@theihe.org if you are interested.

You will receive a Certificate of Attendance with CPD just for attending the course. If you wish to go on to apply for the Professional Diploma you will need to successfully complete all course assignments before submitting an electronic portfolio of evidence (via Dropbox) to the IHE showing your competence.

NB: the Professional Diploma is not awarded automatically just for attending the course you must make a portfolio submission to the IHE which is explained in this guidance.

Gaining the Professional Diploma and Use of Post-Nominals RegTTME(PDip)

To gain the Professional Diploma in Temporary Traffic Management Engineering, engineers and technicians must prove their competence and commitment in a Professional Review of their portfolio submission to the IHE.

Once you successfully complete the course, you will need to submit an electronic portfolio of evidence (via Dropbox) to gain the Professional Diploma. You can access the Professional Diploma application form by logging into the IHE members area and going to Professional Certificates & Dipomas/RegTTME(PDip). Once your portfolio is submitted to the IHE, it will be assessed by an industry professional and go to the IHE Professional Standards and Qualifications Committee for ratification. If successful, you will gain the Professional Diploma in TTME and be entitled to use the post-nominals RegTTME(PDip).

Revalidation

To maintain the ability to use your post nominals as part of your career you will need to make sure you maintain your membership with the IHE. You will be sent an invoice on a yearly basis which will cover you from January to December. As part of your renewal of the membership there is a separate part of the process because you have the post nominals gained through the certificate. Every November (starting 2026) you will be given a link to a login where there will be around 20 questions to answer. These questions will be based on any changes in working practices technical documents or other matters relating to temporary traffic management that have occurred in the previous 12 months.

This acts as a method for the IHE to inform you as a professional that there have been changes and assist you to complete your mandatory continuing professional development. These 20 questions have to be completed by the end of November, but you have the entire month of November to answer them. The question will generally ask you to read a specific document and then answer the question until you move on. So long as you successfully complete these 20 questions and pay your renewal you can continue using your post nominals. This method avoids having classroom renewals and deadlines every five years while simultaneously providing a method of updating you of industry progress.
