Who is eligible?
Teaching and learning support activities taking place in Higher and Further Education are wide ranging and often provide suitable evidence of competence for professional registration. In Further Education, registration as an Engineering Technician is a realistic prospect for tutorial staff delivering higher education programmes up to NVQ4 (QCF 4/5). In universities, the opportunities for research and consultancy make it feasible for teaching and research staff to attain registration as a Chartered Engineer. Without a significant research or consultancy portfolio, registration as an Incorporated Engineer may be a realistic option.
Can I register?
The assessment is based on your competence, not the level that you teach. The evidence you provide can also include engineering experiences outside your immediate teaching role. Within academia, obvious examples include course development, involvement in one or more research contracts, possibly as a principal investigator, and working independently on consultancy or voluntary engineering work. However, in a situation where you are not formally identified with a project team producing relevant evidence of competence might be more challenging.
If you have had several years’ experience in an engineering-based job before moving into academia, you may well have developed the appropriate engineering experience and competence beforehand and have evidence you can use to strengthen your application, especially if you can show how your engineering experience influences your current
teaching or research. Typically, several years are required to develop and provide sufficient evidence of competence — although time spent is not the most significant factor in career development.
It is not only competence in applying technical knowledge and understanding that has to be assessed. Registered engineers are expected to be competent in a range of commercial and managerial skills. Increasingly, the work of universities and colleges is carried out within strict financial and commercial boundaries and requires management skills to balance teaching, research and commercial constraints. This provides opportunities for academic engineers to both develop and provide evidence of management and leadership skills. The balance between technical and commercial issues may differ between academia and industry and decisions about resources may be less explicit than in a commercial environment.

To gain Engineering Council registration, engineers and technicians prove their competence and commitment in a Professional Review of their portfolio submission to the IHE.

What if my qualifications are not covered in the guidance?
If your qualifications or experience are not covered in the guidance document you may still be suitable to apply for CEng or IEng. You should ask the IHE for an individual Career Assessment. Your documents will then be put to the IHE Academic Standards Panel for consideration by engineering or academic professionals. They will either confirm your eligibility or provide you with feedback and guidance on the best route for you to achieve registration.
What if I studied overseas?
If you have studied overseas, a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability that covers your degree should enable you to study via the Recognised Qualifications Route. You should contact UK ENIC directly, and obtain a Statement of Comparability yourself before making your application. One-Off Application Fee – £295.00*
*Includes initial Engineering Council registration entry fee
Annual CEng Registration Subscription – £49.45
Annual IEng Registration Subscription – £41.97
Resubmission Fee – Applicants required to resubmit after ratification by the Membership and Qualifications Group will pay 50% of the applicable application fee at resubmission.
