Motorway design at its best
- Wednesday April 19, 2023

In February the IHE Scottish Branch hosted an online technical event, which attracted over 150 members.
Stuart Baird from the Scottish Roads Archive gave an excellent presentation, in which he highlighted that Glasgow has the most extensive network of urban motorways in the UK.
In this talk, the Scottish Roads Archive provided an overview of its planning, design and construction, from the earliest discussions of 1945 to the completion of the M74 extension in 2011.
The talk highlighted some of the system’s unique engineering and architectural features, illustrated with rare photos and diagrams from the archives.
Given the number of members who attended this event, it generated a lot of interest in one of Scotland’s busiest sections of motorway network.
Scottish Branch chairman Graham Drummond commented: ‘It was great to see so many members turning up to this event, giving their support on this interesting topic.
‘It was fascinating to see all the old photographs, drawings and artist impressions, which have been kept for over 50 years.’
IHE members can watch this event on demand by visiting the CPD hub in the members area.
