Our vision is to be the Institute of Choice for Highway Engineers. Our mission is to provide professional development opportunities, support and leadership for individuals to achieve and maintain professional recognition.

Academy Training

The IHE Highway Engineering Academy offers industry-led training in highway engineering. Through one of our specialist training courses leading to an industry-recognised Professional Certificate or Diploma, the HEA delivers the qualifications, skills and knowledge demanded by the highways industry which are in short supply today.

Introducing: Rebecca Bollen IEng FIHE

The Institute of Highway Engineers introduces its new Junior Vice President Elect

Following a nomination process among Council members, the IHE can proudly announce Rebecca Bollen’s appointment as the new Junior Vice President Elect. Rebecca, who has been an integral part of the team over recent years, brings with her a wealth of experience and a track record of success in the field of Urban ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems).

Rebecca’s journey to this esteemed position has been marked by dedication, perseverance and a passion for her work. Beginning her career as a trainee technician in 2002, COLLABORATION she has steadily climbed the ranks, continuously honing her skills and expanding her knowledge base.

Her educational background includes a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of the West of England, which she completed in 2008. Throughout her academic journey, she demonstrated a keen interest in traffic engineering, laying the groundwork for her future endeavours.

After graduating, Rebecca delved deeper into the realm of traffic signals, taking on various roles that allowed her to apply her theoretical knowledge to real-world projects.

Her tenure at reputable firms such as Mouchel and Atkins provided her with invaluable experience and insights, further shaping her expertise in the field. It was in 2019 that Rebecca joined 4way Consulting, bringing her wealth of experience to the team.

Within 4way Consulting, Rebecca has distinguished herself as the Urban ITS discipline lead and a senior traffic signal engineer, specialising in the Smart Cities sector. Her role involves undertaking feasibility studies, conducting detailed designs, validation and ensuring the successful implementation of projects for a diverse clientele comprising both local authorities and private sector entities. Her meticulous approach and dedication to delivering excellence have earned her the trust and admiration of her colleagues and clients alike.

In 2021, Rebecca achieved a significant milestone in her career by attaining Incorporated Engineer status with the IHE. Her outstanding performance during the professional review process not only earned her this prestigious designation but also garnered her the esteemed ‘Best IEng Submission of the Year’ award. This recognition serves as a testament to her expertise and commitment to excellence within the industry.

Beyond her professional achievements, Rebecca is actively involved in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the field of ITS.

She currently serves as the Joint Vice Chair for the Women in ITS Forum of ITS UK, where she advocates for greater representation and support for women in the industry.

Outside of work, Rebecca finds joy and fulfilment in spending time with her family, pursuing her passion for running, and beekeeping.

Her multifaceted interests and commitment to work-life balance serve as an inspiration to her peers and exemplify her well-rounded approach to life.

As Rebecca steps into her new role as Junior Vice President following the AGM on June 21, the IHE looks forward to continued growth and success under her leadership as part of the Presidential Team.

Her expertise, dedication, and vision will undoubtedly contribute to shaping the future direction of the Institute as it continues to innovate and excel in the field of highway engineering.
