IHE signs Academic-Professional Partnership Agreement with Coventry University

  • Tuesday May 9, 2023

The Institute of Highway Engineers and Coventry University are pleased to announce that they have signed an Academic-Professional Partnership Agreement. The Institute developed this agreement to establish a closer working relationship between the IHE and Academic institutions to offer increased support and guidance for students studying Civil Engineering with a particular interest in Highways and Transportation.

The IHE is keen to develop working relationships with all Academic Institutions to support students throughout their education and toward potential professional registration. As a professional Institute, the IHE is actively involved with several universities across the UK. The IHE provides presentations and guidance regarding membership in an institution such as the IHE and advice and support on the various routes to professional registration. The Institute is keen to formalise these arrangements through this recently introduced scheme.

The Civil Engineering course suite at Coventry University is aimed toward students aspiring to become professionally qualified engineers, for those who wish to study Civil Engineering with an emphasis on practice and construction. Coventry University has a long-established reputation for teaching Civil Engineering. Currently, it has excellent links with employers like Arcadis, Arup, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, BAM, Buro Happold, CGL, CPUK, Donaldson Associates, Galliford Try, Geotechnics Ltd, Interserve, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, Morgan Sindall, Mott MacDonald, Severn Trent Water, Warwickshire County Council and Willmott Dixon, many of whom provide direct input into course development as members of our Industrial Advisory Board. Coventry University has well-established links to the highways sector and provides highways and transportation teaching as part of our curriculum – both in taught modules and group-project activities.

IHE Chief Executive Steve Spender commented: “Our relationship with Coventry University has been growing in strength for several years. We hope this collaboration will help strengthen the task of both the IHE and Coventry University to produce academically and professionally qualified engineers in the future. We trust that it will benefit all those involved, most importantly the students whom we hope we can help take their first steps towards gaining professional registration.”

Professor Catherine Hobbs, Academic Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing at Coventry University, said, “I am really pleased that we are partnering with the Institute of Highway Engineers to support students with a particular interest in highways and transportation.  The future of transportation lies in the hands of this generation.  They will benefit enormously from the experience of the highways and transportation industry provided by the IHE.”

Steve Austin, Head of the School of Energy, Construction and Environment at Coventry University, said: “The School of Energy, Construction and Environment is looking forward to being an academic partner with the Institute of Highway Engineers for its Civil Engineering Courses. This key collaboration will help Civil Engineering graduates as they enter such a vital industry.”

Dr Neil Tsang, Associate Professor and the Civil Engineering curriculum lead, at Coventry University, said: “The Civil Engineering course team at Coventry University is delighted to be an academic partner with the Institute of Highway Engineers.  Transportation Engineering is one of the core subjects of the Civil Engineering Curriculum, and many of our graduates work in the highways sector. This collaboration will enhance our students’ learning experience and support their professional development.”
