IHE implements revised Engineering Council standards
- Friday April 9, 2021

The Engineering Council published new editions of its internationally-recognised standards of professional competence and commitment in August of last year. The IHE today starts the process of working towards implementing these new standards for Professional Registration at EngTech, IEng and CEng levels. This process must be completed by the end of 2021.
The overall approach in redrafting the standards to produce the ‘fourth edition’ was to aim for greater clarity, making the requirements more obvious. The number of professional competence and commitment categories remains the same at IEng and CEng level, with an overall increase of one competency at EngTech level. For those applying via Individual assessment routes, the number of Learning Outcomes has been reduced, but some Learning Outcomes have been expanded to cover more areas of learning.
The Engineering Council have published a detailed list of changes to each standards document and this can be downloaded from their website at: https://www.engc.org.uk/standards-guidance/standards/ . The biggest change has been the change of name (and name only) from ‘Standard Route’ to ‘Recognised Qualifications Route’ and ‘Individual Route’ to ‘Individual Assessment Route’.
IHE’s new guidance documents
The IHE today are launching completely new and revised application forms and guidance booklets for these new Engineering Council standards.
These are available at: https://members.theihe.org/page/professional_registration
These documents have a completely different aesthetic style from the previous designs to aid differentiation between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ standards. The process for applying for EngTech, IEng or CEng remains the same.
What does this mean for me?
- If you are working on an existing EngTech, IEng or CEng application, you will need to complete this and submit it to the IHE by the submission deadline on Thursday 21st October 2021 in accordance with the submission deadlines detailed on the IHE website. This is to ensure that your application is processed and assessed before the Engineering Council implementation deadline of 31st December 2021. Seven months should be ample time to achieve this.
- If you have not yet started your application for EngTech, IEng or CEng you should use the new IHE application forms and guidance to produce your application in accordance with the new standards. These can be found in the IHE member’s area.
- If you unsure you will complete your application by the October deadline, you will need to think about transferring the work you have already done to ensure it complies with the new standards. The new guidance documents and application forms will assist with this, as they keep the same format as those used previously. Again, seven months should be ample time to achieve this.
Please note: We cannot review applications that have been produced on the previous standards after 31st December 2021.
