Ice accretion on the Queensferry Crossing

  • Thursday May 18, 2023

In March, IHE Scottish Branch members attended the latest technical event at the Traffic Scotland Control Room, South Queensferry, in front of those three iconic structures crossing the Forth estuary.

During this event, an excellent presentation was given by Chris Tracey, bridges manager from BEAR Scotland, the operating company maintaining the Queensferry Crossing as part of the South East Trunk Road Unit.

Chris’ topic was about the investigations into the technology used to mitigate against ice accretion on the Queensferry Crossing. Chris spoke about the weather forecasting, monitoring and the active and passive strategies used in dealing with ice on this iconic structure.

Scottish Branch chairman Graham Drummond commented: ‘The bridge is such an iconic structure and it’s amazing all the hard work that is going on in the background to maintain this bridge whilst keeping the general public safe.’
