East Midlands Branch virtual CPD event
- Tuesday May 18, 2021

The IHE East Midlands Branch held its second virtual CPD event of 2021 on 24 March, covering Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
The event proved to be the largest held in the branch’s history, with 80 members attending to hear a thought -provoking presentation by guest speakers from Lincolnshire County Council; Liz Burnley, County Manager for Development, and Warren Peppard, Head of Development Management.
Mr Peppard gave an overview of climate change, flooding and why SuDS has come to the forefront of current practices for new highway drainage since the Flood Risk Management Act 2010 and the appointment of lead local flood authorities.
The disadvantages of traditional piped drainage systems were discussed, along with the benefit of SuDS and their ability to manage water at its source.
Ms Burnley covered the guidance documents available for those developing SuDS and Lincolnshire’s approach to pre-application advice for developers and stakeholders, including what types of systems the authority will adopt.
Common myths were also addressed, including issues around constructing SuDS on slopes and the cost of maintenance compared to that of traditional systems.
The presentation was the perfect introduction to understanding the benefits of SuDS.
IHE members can watch the presentation on-demand by visiting our CPD hub.
