Successful joint IHE/IAT event
- Wednesday April 22, 2026
The East Midlands branches of both the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) came together to hold a very successful day-long seminar on ‘Circular Economy for Highways – A Fresh Look at Best Practice’. The event, held at The Cambridge Belfry, was also supported by the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA).
IAT president Helen Bailey opened the seminar with the challenge: it’s not just about recycling more – it’s about redesigning our systems to deliver performance, carbon reduction, cost efficiency and resilience together. The keynote address was delivered by Jonathan Evans of Lincolnshire County Council, demonstrating how local authorities can lead the way in good practice with dedicated recycling facilities for asphalt materials.
Other speakers at the event were Andy Jones, chair of RSTA, Dr James Stokes of Jean Lefebvre (UK) and Dr Michael Gordon of WSP, who delivered his speech about performance testing and standards with his usual passion, and finally Roger Eke of Holcim (UK). IHE president Katharine Kelly closed the seminar, summarising the day and celebrating the benefits of collaboration and how it genuinely moves the industry forward. Ms Kelly also thanked the event organisers, Lyle Andrew, Paul Kidd, and Brian Downes.
