Through the eyes of a Reviewer
- Monday June 23, 2025
By Martin Polland, IHE Past President
Becoming a professional registration reviewer with the IHE is both a rewarding and impactful experience. It requires a strong foundation of subject knowledge, critical thinking and effective communication. I first became a reviewer in 2016, and since then it has been a fulfilling way to contribute back to the profession that has served me so well.
As a reviewer, it’s essential to stay up to date with current industry standards and emerging developments. Objectivity is key: you must assess each candidate fairly, based on the evidence and projects they present, free from any personal bias. Asking open-ended questions helps create a supportive environment and encourages more thoughtful, detailed responses.
Working alongside a fellow reviewer, you’ll take part in both the initial assessments and professional review interviews for those seeking IEng or CEng registration. You will also review EngTech/ICTTech applications, which normally do not require an interview. The majority of interviews are now conducted online, making it easier to participate without significant disruption to your day job.
If you are already professionally registered (IEng or CEng) and are interested in becoming a reviewer, we’d love to hear from you. Simply email us at professionalreviews@theihe.org. Our next training session is scheduled for Tuesday 9 September. Why not give something back to the industry?
