Masculinity in Engineering
- Monday January 6, 2025
EqualEngineers is leading an initiative on the ‘Masculinity of Engineering’ and we would like to invite our members to complete the survey.
We’re facing a mental health emergency in engineering. Men making up the demographic majority in engineering can create the impression that they are shielded from marginalisation, but the reality is that societal pressures and workplace cultures can significantly impact men’s mental health. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK, and male workers in construction and engineering are 3.7 times more likely to take their own lives than the national average.
Their previous Masculinity in Engineering Research, conducted in 2019 and 2022, revealed a troubling increase in respondents who had considered self-harm or suicide—rising from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4. This year, supported by Andy’s Man Club, EqualEngineers aims to deepen their understanding of how engineering workplace cultures influence mental health and to identify actionable strategies to foster psychological safety and inclusivity.
If you would like to contribute, please fill in the survey below. Your feedback could make a meaningful difference in encouraging engineers to share their experiences and in raising awareness about the vital importance of mental health in our sector.
The survey will be open until the end of January and can be accessed via the link included below:
