Scotland Branch News

April 11, 2018

The branch held its latest technical evening and the discussion topic for the evening was the Queensferry Crossing. Our thanks go to Alastair Templeton for providing a great overview of such a large scale project.  A lively debate then followed and it was a pleasure to have held such a good event, with fantastic views of the three bridges on offer to everyone attending.

Our next technical evening is planned for Wed 25th April where WJ Road Markings will provide an overview of latest lining products and applications. We will also look to hold our AGM the same evening, emails confirming same will be sent out shortly. Anyone wishing to stand for election to committee in Scotland will have the opportunity to do so and I would encourage anyone wishing to do so to come forward. It would be great to have some new faces on board and keep up the good work that is undertaken in Scotland.

The branch is here to help as many members as possible and I would like to thank all members for making the Scotland branch the success it has been of late. Remember, support is always there to help people gain professional qualifications and, with 2018 being the Year of the Engineer, I would encourage as many people as possible to take the next step in gaining a professional qualification.  The IHE is encouraging members to come forward and has, in support of the Year of the Engineer, reduced the fees for professional reviews. I know we have a few members currently working on their reviews and I wish them the very best and I hope you achieved the results your hard work and endeavour deserves.

My congratulations to our latest Scottish branch members who undertook professional reviews, two CEng and one IEng submission in the first two months is fantastic and I wish you all the very best in your future careers.

I can confirm this will be by last event as Chair in Scotland and I would like to express my thanks for the support of everyone who has assisted over the years of my tenure. I have been fortunate to have support from our new committee this past year, who have also done a fantastic job for all members. I will still be around and serve on IHE Council and will continue to offer my support to Gordon Brown  who will take over the role of Chair from April.

Finally, thanks again to everyone for helping me over the years, there are too many people to mention individually.  I’m fortunate that we all shared the common goal of a branch being run for members and assisting everyone where we can to further their learning and careers.

Best wishes,
Martin Polland
Chair IHE Scotland
