New Reviewers training webinar

On 12 June, the IHE welcomed recently registered professionals to our New Reviewers Training Webinar – an important step in developing the next generation of Reviewers for Engineering Council Professional Reviews. The session provided practical insights, guidance and a clear pathway for those looking to give back to the profession.
Opening the webinar, immediate past President Katharine Kelly emphasised the significance of seeing so many new registrants stepping forward to support others. The session brought together new reviewers, experienced volunteers and IHE staff, creating a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.
Attendees heard from new reviewers Oye Ibidapo-Obe and Bradley Doran, who shared their experiences transitioning from applicants to assessors. A key theme was the shift in mindset – moving from demonstrating your own competence to fairly and objectively assessing others. Preparation, consistency and evidence-based questioning are central to this role, with the aim of helping candidates clearly demonstrate their competencies.
Mr Doran also outlined the commitment and responsibilities involved, including the time, depth of review and training involved. Reviewers work closely with a co-reviewer throughout the process to assess applications, conduct interviews and provide feedback.
The webinar highlighted that becoming a reviewer is also a valuable development opportunity. Reviewers can strengthen their communication and mentoring skills, gain exposure to different disciplines and expand their professional networks, all while contributing a variety of skills and learning towards their own CPD record.
New reviewers may initially feel uncertain but support from IHE staff and experienced reviewers helps build confidence over time, particularly in competency-based interviewing, noting that active listening skills improve quickly.
