IHE at ACED Conference
- Tuesday October 21, 2025
The Association of Civil Engineering Departments (ACED) Conference 2025 at the University of Leeds had a packed programme, including presentations from all the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) for the professional engineering institutions (ICE, IStructE, PWI, CIHT and IHE).
IHE chief executive Lyle Andrew updated the delegates on recent changes at the institute, including the benefits of membership and professional registration.
The conference also heard from academics and industry voices exploring the future of civil engineering education in areas such as the rise of AI in higher education, authentic assessments and reducing reliance on traditional exams.
One of the main talking points of the event was the JBM rules that at least 50% of department staff should be professionally registered.
Mr Andrew highlighted how IHE offers specific guidance for academic members to become professionally registered and therefore contribute to the JBM requirement for accredited courses.
IHE’s tailored guidance for academics helps to map achievements to the Engineering Council’s UK-SPEC requirements, while also providing step-by-step support to prepare a strong application that reflects the candidate’s research, teaching and professional impact.
ACED promotes excellence in the teaching of civil engineering students and in the activity of civil engineering research. Membership is open to any higher education department that offers a civil engineering or related degree accredited by the JBM.
