Academy Training

The IHE Highway Engineering Academy offers industry-led training in highway engineering. Through one of our specialist training courses leading to an industry-recognised Professional Certificate or Diploma, the HEA delivers the qualifications, skills and knowledge demanded by the highways industry which are in short supply today.

Professional Development Partnerships are open to Highways Sector businesses, Local Government Authorities, Academic Institutions, Professional Engineering Institutes and other Highways interest based organisations.


We administer the registers for Highway Inspectors and Road Safety Auditors as well as manage our active forums contributed to by highways professionals.

The IHE Southern Branch would like to invite you to their next CPD webinar on Thursday 11th July 2024.


An outline of the project, its justification, scope and some of the challenges faced during its development and implementation.

Presenter – Jonathan Wade, National Highways

• Left school at 16 and went through a 4 year mechanical engineering apprenticeship with MoD at the National Gas Turbine Establishment, Pyestock
• Remained with MoD in a trials, test and evaluation environment initially in naval mechanical engineering then engineering training and production workshops
• The Organisation became Defence Evaluation & Research Agency & I ran a succession of engineering, major construction and infrastructure projects for DERA & QinetiQ at various MoD sites including Boscombe Down, Aberporth, Hebrides, Porton Down, Eskmeals & Farnborough
• Left MoD after 37 years for a two year career break
• Joined National Highways and took over the M25 Junction 10 / A3 Wisley improvement project in November 2017. Have since led the scheme through preliminary design, statutory consultation, the public inquiry, detail design and now into construction.
