Topic: Introduction to Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO)
Presenter: Dr. Umair Durrani
Time – 4-5 pm (UK time); 6-7pm (Qatar time)
This session highlights how the principles of the Safe System Approach can be applied in real road projects to reduce crashes and improve safety. It includes practical examples from audits, traffic management, and crash investigations, focusing on proactive solutions aligned with Vision 2030.

Topic Abstract:
SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility) is a free, open-source microscopic traffic simulation platform used globally by researchers and engineers to model, test, and evaluate traffic scenarios before committing to costly real-world changes.
This session provides a live demonstration of SUMO (no prior simulation experience required). Starting in SUMO’s built-in network editor (netedit), we construct a three-lane motorway with an on-ramp merge, introduce a mixed traffic stream comprising traditional, connected, and autonomous vehicles, and observe the emergence of a realistic merge bottleneck in real time. We then apply a Variable Speed Limit (VSL) strategy upstream of the bottleneck and demonstrate how simulation can quantify its benefits before field deployment.
The session concludes with a walkthrough of SUMO’s data outputs: simulated inductive loop detector readings, link-level speed and flow data, and individual vehicle journey times. All simulation files will be available, so you can explore and extend these scenarios later.
