With over 1.35 million traffic fatalities worldwide every year, traffic safety continues to be an urgent global issue. Both researchers and practitioners are exploring ways to reduce the frequency and severity of traffic crashes; however, there often is a significant gap between research and practice. This presentation explores the concept of the 4 Es in transportation safety — Engineering, Education, Enforcement, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), from a researcher’s perspective. It discusses a few research projects where the research results are directly implemented by practitioners to advance safety in the United States.
