Growing a resilient research base for urban trees
The Trees and Design Action Group aims to ensure that its guidance documents are supported by evidence-based research and the need to support getting research out into practice for the greater benefit of urban trees and us all. Practice may be in the built or natural environment, arboricultural practice or a combination of benefits that the research can deliver.
For this seminar we put out a call for new and emerging research by early career researchers offering inspiration and greater success in practice for urban forestry. This has a modest prize of £500 to the ‘winner’ and £250 each to two ‘runners’. The key questions are: “ What are their research outcomes and how would this apply to practice in the UK?”
The audience will be invited to make the final choice.
Chair: Susannah Gill, Research, Policy and Practice, The Mersey Forest
Keynote:
The importance and value of tree research and its benefits to practice
Professor Cecil Konijnendijk, Director, Nature Based Solutions Institute and author of the 3-30-300 Principle for urban trees
This will be followed by 6 short (10 minute) presentations from each of the finalists with a chance for the audience to ask questions and the researchers to ask questions from the audience.
The audience will be asked to select the winner and two runners up after their presentations.
Sponsor: The Mersey Forest, one of England’s 15 Community Forests, covering Cheshire and Merseyside. It has established over 10 million trees since the early 1990s, working with trees for the benefit of people, nature, and climate. Its new Ideas Lab seeks to work with academic partners to turn The Mersey Forest into a living laboratory, researching alongside and informing delivery.
Partners:
Chartered Institution of Ecology and Environmental Management, Institute of Highway Engineers, Landscape Institute, Town and Country Planning Association, Urban Design Group.
