Transportation systems are largely managed through reactive processes. Congestion is investigated after delays become persistent, safety measures are often introduced after crashes have occurred, and road maintenance is commonly initiated after defects become visible. These approaches remain necessary, but they rely mainly on evidence of events that have already happened. Proactive intelligence complements conventional practice by identifying early indicators of operational problems, safety risks and infrastructure deterioration. It combines systematically collected field data with engineering analysis to support earlier investigation and more informed intervention.
This webinar will explain the difference between reactive, predictive and proactive approaches in transportation engineering. It will examine why historical records alone may not provide sufficient warning of emerging problems and how traffic observations, vehicle trajectories, road-user interactions, road-condition measurements and geospatial information can contribute to a broader understanding of network performance. The session will introduce relevant methods, including surrogate safety assessment, sensor-based road monitoring, digital representations of transportation environments and predictive analysis. It will also address practical considerations such as data quality, model validation, human oversight, uncertainty and the continued importance of professional engineering judgement.
Presenter Bio: Dr. Suvin Venthuruthiyil
Dr. Suvin P. Venthuruthiyil is a transportation systems engineer, researcher, and the Founder and CEO of DromoLys Research & Development Pvt. Ltd. Working at the intersection of road safety, mobility data and infrastructure intelligence, he is advancing Proactive Mobility Intelligence—an approach that uses engineering evidence to identify emerging transportation risks before they develop into serious failures.
Dr. Suvin has more than a decade of academic and research experience across IIT Guwahati, the University of Memphis, the University of Illinois Chicago and IIT Hyderabad, where he previously served as an Assistant Professor. He has authored over 25 scientific publications in proactive road safety, intelligent transportation systems, vehicle-trajectory analytics and traffic engineering. His doctoral research led to the development of Anticipated Collision Time (ACT), a surrogate safety indicator for assessing collision risk before crashes occur. Through DromoLys, he now translates research into practical intelligence for safer, smarter and more sustainable transportation systems. His guiding belief is that the future of mobility lies in recognising risks early enough to prevent them.
