Transportation agencies have recognized the importance of the utilization of off-line and real-time decision support systems to enhance transportation system management and operations (TSMO). The effectiveness of these systems are expected to increase as data from multiple sources become available for all parts of the transportation network, as models and tools are further developed and validated based on data analytics and simulation, and as the complexity of the system increases with the introduction of connected and automated vehicles in the traffic stream. This presentation will review data analytics and simulation modeling-based approaches for off-line and real-time support of TSMO and the opportunities for the implementation of these approaches.
Presenter – Dr Mohammed Hadi, Professor and Director of Lehman Center for Transportation Research, Florida International University
Dr. Mohammed Hadi, P.E., is a professor and director of Lehman Center for Transportation Research at Florida International University in Miami, FL. He has more than 35 years of experience in transportation engineering (10 years in the private sector and the rest in academic and research institutions). His experience has been in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Connected and Automated Vehicles, Transportation System Management and Operations (TSMO), data analytics and decision support, and multi-resolution transportation system simulation. He graduated with a Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida in 1990 and worked in a transportation research center in Florida until 1995. Between 1995 and 2005, Dr. Hadi worked in a consultant firm to provide consultant services in all areas of ITS to public and private agencies from around the United States and Puerto Rico. Since joining the FIU Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in 2005, he has been leading the ITS program at the FIU Lehman Centre for Transportation Research; working on national, state, and local research projects and delivering ITS education to graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Hadi is a co-chair of the TRB Traffic Simulation Committee and a member of ITS Florida Board of Director.
