Details
The International Roughness Index (IRI) has evolved from its inception as a parameter to measure ride quality into a standardized method for assessing road performance. This presentation will cover the basics of IRI, explaining its development and how it became an integral tool in road construction and maintenance. Key considerations for ensuring smoothness during construction to achieve optimal road quality through regular maintenance will also be highlighted. Additionally, the specific IRI requirements in Qatar will be presented, focusing on local standards and practices to ensure road performance and rideability.
Presenter – Dr. Punya Kathari
Dr. Punya Kathari is a Civil Engineer with over 23 years of experience in road engineering, specializing in Pavement design, road construction, quality control and material management, maintenance, and asset management. Holding a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, his research focused on fiber-modified bituminous mixes and sustainable, environmentally-friendly pavement materials that contribute to road construction and environmental sustainability.
Dr. Kathari has extensive experience in pavement design, life cycle cost analysis, and economic analysis for road projects, including those funded by the World Bank. He is also a key member in establishing the Road Asset and Condition Data Collection System for PWA (Public Works Authority, Ashghal) as part of road asset management in Qatar. Dr. Kathari’s research publications are featured in Scopus-indexed journals, showcasing his contributions to pavement engineering. He is certified as a PMP® Project Management Professional and ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor.
Currently serving as the Pavement and Material Manager at Parsons Corporation in Doha, Qatar, Dr. Kathari specializes in International Roughness Index (IRI) measurement, pavement performance evaluation, and advanced data collection tools like Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS), Ground Penetration Radar (GPR), and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD).
