We have taken the decision that all current events planned up until the end of June are being postponed. This falls in line with the advice coming from Government about restrictions being in place for at least the next twelve weeks. We will continue to monitor the situation in the coming weeks, and as things hopefully become much clearer, we will notify you all if these arrangements change. Please continue to monitor this page for further updates: http://theihe.org/coronavirus-advice/.

Development Management is an important part of the planning process and is assuming greater professional and political significance in delivering and managing the sustainable communities’ agenda. It is a function which ensures that any new development has the minimum adverse impact on highway safety, traffic capacity, environmental capacity and convenience to transport users as a whole.

IHE’s Transport Development management course is the only one in the UK designed specifically for transport practitioners working in Development Management roles and leads to the IHE Professional Certificate/Diploma in DM.

The course delivers learning across the wide diversity of subjects a Development Management Practitioner requires, in both the private and public fields of work, which are assessed through assignments leading to a DM Foundation Certificate.

We also offer an extra day on appeal work, including a practical exercise/mock hearing. Even the initial highways response must beware of later dispute. You will explore good practice, how to prepare and deliver a case and how to manage conflict, including an interactive workshop testing your views.

The course has been updated to ensure the latest government changes with regards to national planning policy, S106 contributions and sustainable drainage systems are fully covered.

Students attend two residential sessions of two days each, with an optional appeal work day added to the second session, and complete four assignments, each of which demands around three days preparation at work or in their own time. Line managers are expected to mentor and support their staff.

Most of our training is delivered throughout the year in the clean, contemporary setting of our Birmingham office space and meeting rooms. This centrally located venue in Birmingham Brindleyplace give excellent connectivity across the UK.

Training is also run at our main IHE London office in Euston Tower, Euston RoadConference Aston, Birmingham B4 7ET, in Edinburgh at 7/9 North St Davids Street, EH2 1AW and at NAL, Weir Lane, Worcester, WR2 4AY (IHE’s Corporate Partner).

Please check the location under your specific course to find out where your course is run.

Professional Certificate

IHE Professional Certificates and Professional Diplomas accredit the skills highways practitioners are expected to know and deliver in the workplace. IHE membership is not required, and you don’t need any specific academic qualifications or to take a training course.

IHE Professional Certificates are one of the cornerstones of our exciting new virtual Highway Engineering Academy. They can be completed either through a structure training course or through independent study. IHE Professional Certificates are for practitioners who are technically competent and are often skilled practitioners working under the guidance of others. More information can be found in the Professional Certificate application and guidance booklets below.

In addition, IHE Professional Certificates can form the basis for Engineering Council registration at Engineering Technician (EngTech) level. The two processes are designed to build upon each other and applying for EngTech alongside your Professional Certificate is easy. The supporting guidance booklets can be found below.

Professional Diploma

IHE Professional Certificates and Professional Diplomas accredit the skills highways practitioners are expected to know and deliver in the workplace. IHE membership is not required, and you don’t need any specific academic qualifications or to take a training course.

IHE Professional Diplomas provide recognition to the skilled senior practitioners working in the highways sector. Like the rest of the virtual Highway Engineering Academy, they can be completed either through a structure training course or through independent study. IHE Professional Diplomas are for practitioners know the ‘why’ as well as the ‘how’, exercise independent judgement, hold a responsible position and lead and manage. More information can be found in the Professional Diploma application and guidance booklets below.

In addition, IHE Professional Diplomas can provide the foundation for achieving the academic bases required for Engineering Council registration at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level. The two processes are designed to complement each other and applying for IEng alongside your Professional Diploma is straightforward. The supporting guidance booklets can be found below.

Submission Deadlines

Due to the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, we have had to make some alterations to our Professional Certificate and Diploma process over the next few weeks.

IHE staff will be on hand as usual (by email) to assist with any queries you may have about your application, to provide mentoring support, or to clarify any queries about your assessment portfolio. However, we ask you to refrain from sending us your completed certifcate/diploma portfolio until the guidance on our website changes or we contact you. The London office of the IHE is closed and some disruptions to the national postal system have already been reported – we want to keep your information safe and secure, and at the present time the best way of achieving this is if you prepare your portfolio ready to send, but do not post it to us.

We have procedures in place to ensure your portfolio will be reviewed in a timely fashion as soon as travel restrictions are lifted.

The IHE would like to thank you for bearing with us during this time. We want to assist you in achieving Professional Certification in a way that is simple, hassle-free and timely. At the same time we want to ensure your personal data and hard work are kept secure, ready to be assessed and your results issued as quickly as possible when the present national situation improves.
