The only UK course specifically for temporary traffic management designers, engineers and practitioners working in the planning and design of temporary situations on highways.
The IHE’s Professional Certificate in Temporary Traffic Management Engineering, including design, enables those working within the highway industry to demonstrate their knowledge and competence in this field.
It covers all aspects of temporary traffic management engineering, temporary signing, and other related highway engineering topics for high speed and rural and urban roads. The certificate is designed to accommodate the needs of those who have extensive practical experience gained from working within the industry but may not have considered the possibility or potential of a non-vocational course beyond NVQ level 3. For employers, this Professional Certificate is nationally recognised by the published industry guidance as a means of providing evidence of having competent design and engineering personnel and provides a method for the company to demonstrate to a client, compliance with the requirements of relevant published standards. It provides an industry benchmark and the Certificate has received endorsement from Highways England.
The course is taught at Foundation level and is accepted as additional learning and supporting technical report to an Engineering Technician application.
What experience do I need to attend?
Candidates need to have some temporary traffic management experience to attend the course but all information is provided. Assessment is by written questions but these can be handwritten or computer aided. Knowledge of CAD is not essential to complete the course.

IHE Professional Certificates and Professional Diplomas accredit the skills highways practitioners are expected to know and deliver in the workplace. IHE membership is not required, and you don’t need any specific academic qualifications or to take a training course.
IHE Professional Certificates are one of the cornerstones of our exciting new virtual Highway Engineering Academy. They can be completed either through a structure training course or through independent study. IHE Professional Certificates are for practitioners who are technically competent and are often skilled practitioners working under the guidance of others. More information can be found in the Professional Certificate application and guidance booklets below.
In addition, IHE Professional Certificates can form the basis for Engineering Council registration at Engineering Technician (EngTech) level. The two processes are designed to build upon each other and applying for EngTech alongside your Professional Certificate is easy. The supporting guidance booklets can be found below.
IHE Professional Diplomas provide recognition to the skilled senior practitioners working in the highways sector. Like the rest of the virtual Highway Engineering Academy, they can be completed either through a structure training course or through independent study. IHE Professional Diplomas are for practitioners know the ‘why’ as well as the ‘how’, exercise independent judgement, hold a responsible position and lead and manage. More information can be found in the Professional Diploma application and guidance booklets below.
In addition, IHE Professional Diplomas can provide the foundation for achieving the academic bases required for Engineering Council registration at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level. The two processes are designed to complement each other and applying for IEng alongside your Professional Diploma is straightforward. The supporting guidance booklets can be found below.
