Becoming a professionally registered engineer demonstrates your high standard of competence and commitment. By choosing to register, you set yourself apart as an engineer with high standards and also demonstrate your commitment to maintain that competence in the future.

Whether you’re entering the engineering profession or looking for the next step to progress your career, gaining one of the professional registration titles can allow you to enjoy the benefits of greater mobility and career progression. Registration also provides a firm foundation of ethics, sustainability and professionalism.

Registration is open to any practising engineer or technician who can demonstrate the required competence – what matters is the standard you’ve reached, not the route you took to get there.

Why get Professionally Registered?

Why choose the IHE?

  • We’ve been registering engineers and technicians with the Engineering Council since 1972
  • You can take advantage of our extensive highways experience and trained specialist advisors, mentors and reviewers
  • We offer Professional Registration routes for all our members
  • We support new and existing registrants wanting to progress
  • You will get a fair but rigorous review by your peers
  • We can provide you with a free career assessment if you are unsure of your route

In addition to Engineering Council registration, the IHE is licensed by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, to award Chartered IT Professional (CITP) and Registration for IT Technicians (RITTech).

CITP and RITTech demonstrates a broad awareness across IT, a depth of knowledge in a particular area of specialism (highway engineering) and is underpinned by periodic revalidation.  Holding CITP or RITTech status reflects your integrity, professionalism and dedication.

How to register

As soon as you join the IHE you can look to gain your Professional Registration.

To gain the accolade of Engineering Council registration, engineers and technicians prove their competence and commitment at a Professional Review of their submission.

Our review process comprises a report of your experience backed up by evidence and presented at an interview with two registered engineers if you’re applying for CEng or IEng.

There is normally no interview for EngTech or ICTTech.

There are also Individual routes to all registered titles.
