Follow up to previous questions on handsets maybe.
In market to change phone and one possibility is Nokia E90. Seem to recall that previous versions of Nokia communicators have been used to dial in to UTC instations. has any one pulled the same trick with this (not so )little piece of kit?
I did indeed raise this on the Freelists last January and drew a blank. The problem appears to be that the Nokia E90 uses a newer type of symbian operating system (S60?), therefore terminal emulation software used on the older 9300/9500 Communicators such as NewDIAL95 will not work. The E90 does not have Windows which causes problems with finding terminal emulation software.
Have you made any progress with this? I am now considering alternative devices such as the HTC Shift, but this is larger and less discreet, which is important in the city streets of Nottingham.
I drew a blank also. I got the impression that Vodaphone were on the point of withdrawing so just before ordering had my IT chack. Sure enough Vodaphone have announced that they will withdraw the E90 in the near future.
ah well meant that I could get the far more 'sexy' E71 and carry on using the laptop!

We're looking to dial in to our traffic system remotely, and would like to know how (or if) you manage to do it. Further to the recent queries about the E90, which I personally had no success with, on O2 at least, I'd like to know if anyone has successfully used a Windows Mobile device.
Specifically, we have some O2 XDA units on test - a re-badged HTC Advantage [http://www.htc.com/europe/product/advantage/overview.html] - which seems to have the ideal form factor for site validation. Unfortunately I'm having issues with both handset and network.
Now, I've been told after weeks of wrangling that on O2 the dialup CSD connection required a connection to the 2G, GSM network; the connection would always fail on the 3G WCDMA network. This is something I've had a measure more success with when testing - the software mToken will at least dial out on 2G; it won't talk to the traffic system properly, but it's a start. Unfortunately this is using an older XDA, the Advantage won't connect to the 2G network at all, it just locks up! It's interesting to note that during all of the testing I managed with the E90, O2 never mentioned this network limitation, and had me running around in circles with Nokia's own support. No actual testing with Symbian PuTTY was ever managed because the thing just wouldn't dial out.
I seem to have have three options on the software side:
** mToken Lite (http://www.choung.net/) - unhelpfully they've stopped selling mToken Lite, and not replaced it yet. I have a beta version of Token2Shell, the replacement product, but can't test it on the 2G WM device just yet. Hopefully I'll be able to set more configuration options than the evaluation version of mToken Lite, and force it to 9600 baud... Then we might get somewhere... ** VxHPC Plus (http://www.cam.com/vxhpcplus.html) - looks like it should do the job. Doesn't. Doesn't seem to want to dial out regardless of GSM or WCDMA. ** Zterm Pocket PC (http://www.coolstf.com/ztermppc/) - again, looks nicely configurable and should do the job. Doesn't. Doesn't dial out even on 2G.
If anyone else has had similar pain trying to do this, I'd appreciate knowing if/how it was resolved. Sadly good condition Nokia 9500s are both rare and expensive these days.

Having read the comments above I tried forcing my Orange SPV M3100 (a rebadged HTC Hermes) to use the 2g GSM network.
I've previously been unable to get it to dial out even when using it as a bluetooth modem for the laptop.
By forcing it to GSM it dialled out, and using the inbuilt terminal package I can log in and execute commands on a Siemens UTC system. Unfortunately the inbuilt terminal package won't allow any UTC display screens (eg. moni, dipm, etc) to be displayed. I've tried vxHpc, but that won't dial at all, so I'm after suggestions of a terminal emulation package to use.
If I can find suitable software, it will be a reasonable tool for small amounts of on street validation/fine tuning work.
Prior to reading this post I had given up on using it as a roving terminal, since numerous calls to Orange technical support had ended up with the response that it's not possible.
Have you tired my Tapi Term software that I posted with TfL Toolbox ?

That does dial up CSD on GSM with my XDA Orbit fine. The emulation is based around VT100. I could never get a connection with an Orbit II or the new XDA Steller - maybe that is due to the 3G problem you mention.
Or TfL Toolbox has a RAS version and can do RAS Telnet which is better than just dialling up a modem but it does depend on your instation.
