This subject again rears its ugly head but we recently completed a G39 course run by the HEA (ASLEC) and were advised that considerable emphasis is to be given to all Traffic Systems Practitioners being accredited to appropriate levels of Sector 8.
The advice given is that even those accessing the facility panel to switch signals off/on be accredited to a specific level. As you will appreciate, a considerable undertaking.
We train all who do this but are concerned that ASLEC may be pushing their case, as some signal companies did some time ago. I have asked the HSE for advice and they see no requirement for this at this time but I would ask what you think or know about this please.
Thanks and regards
Grahame Bath Senior Engineer NMIG Surrey County Council
Sector 8 is mandatory for all Highways Agency contracts but only advisable for local authorities however the HSE have said that they will use sector 8 as a benchmark of competency in any related cases. If you can provide evidence of your competency to the same level as someone who is sector 8 approved then you should be ok. I personally recommend sector 8 as it saves you and your organisation from doing all the hard work of proving competency to a satisfactory standard.
Not sure if you are aware but I, along with Sunil, represent the TSG on the sector 8 committee and would be more than happy to assist you further with your sector 8 queries (mark dot stapley at hyderconsulting dot com)
Many thanks Guys I am progressing this in SCC, but wanted assurances from my peers that I was being lead up the garden path. I would welcome a TCUG meeting on this subject but, to meet budget requirements, should have arranged ours for March and April - before any meeting can be arranged.
Looks as if we could be Guinea Pigs. Anybody got any straw and peanuts?
I hope to Mark, but you know what this job is like. You never know what is around the corner. We have set our Sector 8 days with ASLEC as 25th March and 20th April. Can accommodate up to 12 delegates and we may have some spaces (£350 ph) Location - Leatherhead Surrey
I was just curious to see that the fast track course is still alive... the fast track course was something Sunil & myself, along with ASLEC, started up a few years ago to assist client organisations but it did not take off that well, however it seems as ASLEC are still doing the course.
