I wonder if other SCOOT “blue corner” users could give advice.

Currently we access our SCOOT system (running on an Alpha connected on street via BT multi point lines) via “x vision” (remember that?) which gives a remote MMI of the SCOOT machine.

With the advent of “home working” I wonder how colleagues currently (or propose) to interface with their SCOOT systems.
Obviously if money was no object (it is!) then I’d swap out the Alpha for PC SCOOT and IP addressable OTU’s and then access via a VPN.

So how do you access SCOOT remotely (and get a user friendly interface?)
Is anyone running a VPN onto an ‘Alpha’

We run Nokia Communicators for street access via dial in modem and 'Newdialin' software from www.newnet-marketing.de

Don't know if it's still available though.

    Thanks Chris,

Assume that the Nokia (Which I think has be superseded by the N900 although some E90's might still be about) only emulates a "Limited" display requiring you to have a fairly in-depth knowledge of you network/ (Rather than the "user friendly” interface at the terminal?)
Anyone else accessing "remotely" but NOT on street (e.g. from home)

I have (very briefly) used a VPN over 3G into an Alpha. The response was *very* slow, but I think that is more of a 3G issue rather than the VPN. The laptop in use for this runs some free (open source) software called xMing (yes, seriously) which gives a similar interface to the X-Vision we still use on the main PC terminals.

I have access from my desk using this system, over the corporate network, but although it works, it is a little flakey. It's good for checking things out, and quick fixes, but not a substitute for the direct terminal PC with X-Vision. For example, I would not wish to run several VEGA diagrams and other stuff like OVRB at the same time. There are a few "window management" glitches that I have learned how to work around, and I would never trust it for a serious data editing session, in case it locked up during the process. OK for a single quick change though.

If you have some money available, Big Blue offer a modern substitute for X-Vision, (Iforget the name of this) but I haven't tried it.

If you need more, please call.

Perhaps Hummingbird Exceed the name you are looking for as an alternative to X-vision and Xming.

Unfortunately I cannot help with the original question, most of our remote access to the alpha system was just using the plain old terminal interface and a dial up line.

An internet connected KVM with remote access capabilities connected to either the alpha or a client machine running Xvision/Xming/Exceed connected to the alpha would be another (albeit costly and bandwidth hungry) solution.
