I've been told that there is some sort of temporary unit which can be used to monitor red light violations to provide support for the installation of a permanent camera. The suggestion is that it uses tubes similar to a coun site to detect the vehicle crossing the stopline although I've no idea how it interfaces with the red signal.

Does anyone know of such a device. I must admit I'm a bit doubtful about its existance but our AI people want me to find out.

Such an item does exist. We are looking at getting one for red light running at shuttle bridges. My boss is mostly looking into it but drop me an email if you want details of the company we are working with. james.carruthers(at)capita.co.uk

    Thanks

    Jamie,

Are you able to share the details more generally on the forum. You may be swamped as my colleagues would also be interested to know more about this.

    Thanks

My colleagues at the Greater Manchester Transportation Unit (GMTU) have a number of units available that can be installed at traffic signal stoplines to record red light running. The units use a tube installed on the carriageway just after the stopline and monitors the state of the traffic signals via a optical sensor (i.e. there is no physical connection to the signals). The sensor doesn't obscure the signals. The equipment is made by a company called Metrocount.

The contact at GMTU is Phil Butterfield on 0161 455 2085 and he is available discuss any implementation of the equipment.

Thinking back, Im sure that last time I was at IPSEC there was plenty of image processing technology that could easily be re-programmed to work as a red light violation detector. All you need essentially is a modified video detector that as well as looking at the detection zone for traffic also has a detection zone for a change on the red aspect.

Less chance of the system being vandalised thats for sure. Rubber tubes have a nasty habit of disappearing.

I will have a word with my cctv expert and find out.

    Ian.

Our traffic survey unit at Capita Glamorgan has purchased one of the units you refer to, and has carried out a number of surveys within our area. We received very good results with this unit.

As far as I understand, the optical unit has some practical issues with changing light conditions.

Our survey team can provide you with more information if necessary email John.Williams3(at)capita.co.uk

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've passed the information relating to the Metrocount equipment to our AI officer who will no doubt be looking at sites to use it.
