Proposal to change IHE's name

IHE to IHE?

The Institute Council would like your views on whether to change the name of IHE.
Informal discussions have been held in some branches and the Branch Representatives meeting but Council is now formally consulting members and other interested parties prior to the AGM on the 12th June 2009.

Council's reasons for proposing the change are that the "Institute of Highway Engineers":

  • Better reflects industry's understanding of who we are (and what we do)
  • Is a more inclusive name, reflecting the full range of IHE's registerable grades and the growth of the Professional Certificate routes for an expanding range of specialist practitioners
  • Repositions the Institute in light of the Engineering Council Incorporated Engineers' Review which kept the IEng title but has recommended it be reconsidered in 2010 if numbers do not increase
  • Is more appealing to non-members working in the highways profession
  • Is a modest change - simple dropping the word 'Incorporated'

A survey through the E-bulletin is running at 90% in favour.
