Goodbye Transportation Professional, Hello Highways, Surveyor and LTT

Although Transportation Professional has been withdrawn from IHE by IHT, the Institute is promising members wider technical coverage thanks to Highways, Surveyor and LTT.

Highways will publish IHE News and be sent direct to all Institute members.

Bucks CC innovation wins 2006 Prince Michael Award

An innovative marker treatment which helps bikers navigate round a bend has won a Prince Michael Road Safety Award for Buckinghamshire's road safety team, including IHE member, Malcolm James.

IHE joins Parking Forum

IHE has joined the Parking Forum run by the British Parking Association.

Andrew Thurston from the Project Centre is the Institute's representative.

The Forum allows groups with a parking interest to meet and promote good practice.

Older People and Home Zones

IHE is supporting a million pound four year research project into the value and suitability of home zones for older people. The project team is led by Catharine Ward Thompson director of the OPENspace research centre in Edinburgh. It follows on "inclusive design for getting outdoors". (www.idgo.ac.uk).

Asphalt Professional

IHE members can subscribe to the Institute of Asphalt Technology journal for just £36 p.a. for six issues.

Council Changes

June sees members coming and going from Council. Ian Bradfield, Peter Dipper and Jackson Minford are leaving but we welcome newcomers Josie Healy, Denbighshire CC, for Wales and Noel Fenning for Ireland. There are also four main fresh Nominated members - Chris Hodgson,Devon CC, Ellie Gormley, Telford Council, Nick Newton, WSP Development and Tony Sewell, PTS Ltd who is also an IAT branch secretary.

Highway Inspectors

UK Roads Board is backing the IHE-led initiative to introduce national training standards and certification. The aim is to produce a viable package by December 2006.

Transport Planners: consultation on new standards

Consultation on new occupational standards and proposed qualifications for transport planners began on 19th June; the consultation materials are available on both the GoSkills website www.goskills.org and the TPS website www.tps.org.uk/qualifications-consultation.htm. Sayer's recent article, published in Local Transport Today on 1st June 2006, is also available on the TPS website at: www.tps.org.uk/library.htm.

Professional Certificate gains EngTech

Nicola Peck has gone on from the highway development control training programme to gain her Professional Certificate and then Technician registration.

IHE attracts 'Rising Star'

Robert Walton of 4-5 Grays Inn Square who presented the legal section at IHE's recent 'Introduction to Development Control' course has topped the list of most highly rated barristers under 35 for the second year running.

2006 IHT/BP Bitumen Award

Congratulations to Malcolm James (M) and Bucks County Council colleagues for winning the 2006 IHT/BP Bitumen Award for Promoting Road Safety.

The County cut motorcycle casualties by treating a hazardous bend with marker posts designed to hold riders' eyes around the bend helping them to negotiate it.

New streamlined IPR/TPR

IHE Professional Reviews have been streamlined to speed up your application. There's now only one submission to make based around

1. Careery Summary/Experience Report of IPD
2. Project Report with supporting Documents
3. Evidence Summary Forms based on the Project Report.

Reviewers will make an initial assessment (which you'll receive) then call you for interview.

Professional Certificates for Traffic Signal Control

IHE's new certificates allow signals professionals to demonstrate their technical competence. Endorsed by the CSS Traffic Signal Group.

First Development Control Certificates awarded

Pieter Barnard, Susan Anker and Nicola Peck are the first recipients of IHE's Professional Certificates in Highway Development Control. All three are also graduates of the six day foundation course.

AGM

The 2006 Annual General Meeting is at 4.45pm on Friday, 23 June in Manchester.

Chinese Visitors to IHE

A delegation from China visited IHE on 15 March. They were interested in compulsory CPD and establishing a registration system independent of the state as the UK has.

IHE Chartered Engineers

Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has agreed to assist IHE introduce its own chartered professional review. Currently IHE members can apply for the ICE review via the Instiute at ICE member rates thanks to an agreement between the two institutions. Procedures and standards are being drawn up with assistance from a group of friendly chartered enigneers.

Home zone Conference

IHE is discussing with the Urban Renaissance Institute (URI) the scope for a home zone conference in November. URI is an urban design initiative funded by SEEDA and housed at the University of Greenwich. Ideas welcome!

South Western's AGM

South Western's annual meeting and luncheon will be near Exeter on Thursday, 6 April. The Institute's president and secretary will attend.

Progress your Career

IHE's Member and Fellow grades are now open to all practitioners with 10 or more years' experience. You can then take the Professional Review later to register with the Engineering Council if you wish.

IHE donates £3,000 to Practical Action

As part of its celebrations for the 40th Anniversary, IHE members raised £3,000 for Practical Action - 50% over the target.

The money will build 2 or 3 safer river crossings in Nepal.

Study tour to Holland & Germany

IHE members are invited to join the Urban Design Group tour of Woonerven and mixed use high streets. Led by Graham Smith on 11 May to 14 May for £590 inclusive.
