IHE feted at the Savoy
Prince Michael presided at his 2005 International Road Safety Award luncheon on 6 December. He spoke to Gerry Harvey and Tony Sharp and congratulated IHE on its award for the Motorcycling Guidelines.
The Institute was extremely pleased to be able to thank the Guidelines editorial team by inviting them to the lunch. Significant sponsorship was given by DfT, CSS, TfL, BMF, MCIA, and HA.
Home Zones
IHE has been invited to
- support a research proposal to investigate the needs of older people
- join the steering group for the DPTAC project researching whether home zones reflect the needs of disabled people.

Branch Representatives Meeting
Branch representatives gathered at HQ on 13 October for their annual meeting. Susan Broadaway, Senior Vice-President, cut a birthday cake in celebration of the 40th anniversary as glasses were raised to the Institute. Everyone went away with a presentation mug, a gift from the South Western Branch.
Speed cameras to fund Road Safety Schemes
IHE welcomed news that money from cameras will be made available to fund road safety schemes.
The Institute's policy on safety cameras issued in 2004 called for the change.

IHE's 1000th Professional Review celebrated
Ellie Baker, a highways officer for Lincolnshire County Council, today received a commemorative plate celebrating her being the Institute's 1000th review candidate.
IHE started interviewing applicants for IEng and EngTech independently in 1986. Previously reviews had been conducted through a partnership with SCET. The timing of the 1000th milestone is particularly felicitous, it being the Institute's 40th anniversary year.
IHE joint paper at TRICS 2005
Steve Proctor of TMS and Carol Craven, Essex County Council will present details of the Development Control training programme which leads into the IHE Professional Certificate on 2 November at TRICS 2005.
DfT Consultations
To contribute to IHE's response to the Department's consultations on Chapter 8 and Traffic Calming go to Consultations.
Highways Magazine Excellence Awards 2005
IHE's Deputy Secretary chaired the judges for this year's award for Innovative Road Safety Product.
The Awards will be announced at an industry dinner on 20 October.

New Honorary Fellows Phil Jones and Nich Brown
IHE has recognised the significant contribution of two non members by awarding them Honorary Fellowship.
Phil Jones was editor of the IHE Home Zone Design Guidelines.
Nich Brown was a major contributor to the IHE Engineering Guidelines for Motorcycling.

IHE Professional Certificate
At last a proper qualification for development control officers.
The Institute has launched its first Professional Certificate in Development Control. The IHE Certificate which is at technical level, sets the standard for a competent highway development control officer.

IHE Award of Merit
Phil Joel, Yorkshire Branch Secretary, received the 2004 Award from President, Gerry Harvey at the branch AGM.
Phil has been instrumental in rejuvinating the branch and in promoting the Institute to local employers.

The 2005 Annual General Meeting is at 4.45pm, Friday 17 June at De Montfort Hotel, Kenilworth: everyone is welcome.
At 5.15pm, Garrett Emmerson, Bucks CC, leads a discussion on "What would it take to get you out of your car?".
Buses leave at 7.15pm for Anniversary Dinner.

Transportation Planning
The Transport Planning Society (TPS) supported by Go Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport, is leading a national Steering Group to establish a formal qualification for transport planners.
IHE is part of the group with IHT, CILT, TRPI and ICE. Members involved include Tim Edmunds, Norfolk County Council and John Taylor, Atkins backed up by the Institute Secretary.
The first activity of the Steering Group will be identifying the skills sets that will need to be demonstrated by the transport professionals at all three levels. The intention is to establish core competences recognised across all the institutions allowing mutual recognition for transportation professionals at all levels.

Ticket prices now £40 each for IHE members and a guest, all inclusive. Celebrate in style at Warwick Castle.
The Highwayman's Supper includes a tour of the State Rooms, a five course meal, unlimited wine and beer, music, singing and plentry of laughter.
IHE's 21st centry highwaymen meet the 18th century highwaymen: yellow jackets and hard hats welcome.

Members passing their incorporated IPD will now be awarded Member, instead of Associate Member.
