As a long standing member of IHE having joined due to previously being a member of HTTA back in the 1960's I believe that membership has been the foundation and driver of my career. As a practitioner I have been involved with like minded people and over a career period now spanning 50 years. I have built up an invaluable network of professional people and with the belief that you only get out of life what you put into it I have served the Institute at both Branch and National level for many years together with becoming a Professional Reviewer for IEng where I have been priviledged to review some excellent candidates at their IPR. Having gained my own IEng qualification through IHIE I have enjoyed a successful career working in both the public and private sectors fulfilling roles ranging over Client, Consultant and Contractor. For the last 4 years I have operated as a freelance consultant where I have acted as an advisor on Best Practise and Best Value to clients in the profession and latterly this has taken me into companies such as Le Crossing at Dartfort as Tunnel Safety Engineer where as a tunnel specialist I worked on one of the busiest tunnels in Europe until the demise of the Company in Sept 2009. As a tunnel 'specialist', how do you follow that? Well the answer for me has been the ivitation to work on the new A3 Hindhead tunnel in Surrey for the Highways Agency to act as Integrated Systems Project Manager overseeing the latest in design technology in tunnels prior to its commissioning and opening to traffic in the summer of 2011. As one colleague put it 'a job made in heaven for you'. I could only agree but I am convinced I would not have done it without membership or the support of the IHE!
